Every vote counts! Don't give it away cheaply or let it pass without you.The election of 2008 is a critical point in American life and history. Be a part of it, be a part of your life.Remember "If you don't vote, if you don't ask, you can't be upset with what you get!" 1990. In that year Nelson Mandela was finally freed after 27 years of imprisonment, and many years of international pressure on South Africa, for his efforts against Apartheid. Apartheid was the government sponsored policy of racial separation and domination of the White minority in South Africa. This was the same year that for the first time since the end of World War II that Germany was a united single nation. Poland elected their first President under free-elections. Saddam Hussein began to murder Kurds by the hundreds in this year before U.S. pressure caused him to cease. It was in this same year that Iraq attacked Kuwait and the first Gulf War begins. In this same year the Soviet Union, a communist government that considered capitalism a poison on the face of the earth, began to see its end on the horizon. In America the 49ers beat the Broncos 55-10 in Super Bowl devastation. Top songs included "Escapade" by Janet Jackson, "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles, Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O' Connor, and "Vogue" by Madonna. Ghost was the top movie, The Die Hard series had only gotten to 2, Governor Schwarzenegger was still an actor starring in Total Recall, and Michael J Fox finished the Back to the Future trilogy with the 3rd installment. Dr. Seuss had his phenomenal book Oh, the Places You'll Go at #1. The Bourne Ultimatum was a book, as was Clear and Present Danger, and the Stand. Cheers, Rosanne, and A Different World were all popular first-run television shows. And most importantly 4.1 million Americans were born, who are now able to vote for the President of the United States for their first time ever. And why should they care? Because they, along with millions of other Americans, will be deciding everything. They will help decide how much money will be taken from their paychecks every week for federal taxes. They will decide how much of that money will be available to be given back. They will decide where that money will be spent. They will decide how many new jobs will be created, the inflation rate, and the cost to get a mortgage and buy a home. They will decide how much interest will be charged to them on the loans they take to go to college. They will decide where America will fight its battles, and for how long these battles will last. They will decide who they have to compete with for the jobs that are in the nation, and what language the job applications will be in. They will make the choice on whether they will have a retirement that gains anything from the Government, and what age that retirement will occur at. Perhaps as never before the youth of America will have the right to vote for a President that will directly and immediately affect their lives on a daily basis. Every aspect of the lives of those 18 and older will be influenced if not directly guided by the election of the President in 2008. If that is not a reason to be involved, I don't know what is. |
